Technically an autopsy can be performed years after a death, the best results are when one is performed as soon as possible. Due to the level of decomposition, causes that are in a moderate to an advanced states of decomposition (usually decreased over 3 weeks) may not be taken as a case. Many tests cannot be ran on decomposed tissue.
Several individuals play a role in death certification, including the decedent’s medical provider, the funeral director, and sometimes the Medical Examiner or another official. The funeral director ensures that the information on the death certificate is accurate and then forwards it to a medical provider for certification. If the decedent was hospitalized or recently visited a medical provider, that provider usually certifies the death. In cases of home deaths or unwitnessed fatalities, the Medical Examiner and police may investigate before the responsibility returns to the funeral director to find someone to sign the certificate. If no one is available or no doctors are on record, the Medical Examiner or another official may step in to certify the death.
Dr. Hsu is former Medical Examiner, so everything she does is similar. The only
things Dr.Hsu cannot do that are done by a Medical Examiner are X-rays (We do not have access to
an X-Ray machine), police investigation
and records by subpoena. Investigation and medical records are not
available to me, so I need families to provide information instead.
This varies with each case. In some cases, the answer is evident the
day of the autopsy, and you will know the answer the same day. Most
cases require many weeks of testing, analysis and investigation. The
hardest cases are the ones where there are no findings at autopsy and
no history of illness. Laboratory results are only to assist me in
determining the cause of death, they don’t answer all the questions.
Time must be allowed for analysis of the items sent out.
Yes, but I prefer NOT to. Ever hear the saying “lightning never strikes
the same place twice?” Well, if the first autopsy was done properly, it
is similar to lightning striking. NOTHING is in the same condition it was
in prior to the case. Depending on the request, most second look
cases are a waste of your money. However, if only a partial autopsy
was done, that is a different story.
NO, Dr. Hsu cannot tell you definitively if you have a malpractice case. While Dr. Hsu is a Forensic specialist, that is NOT the same as being a LAWYER.
Dr. Hsu can certainly document findings that can assist your lawyer in
pursuing a malpractice case, but law and medicine are not the same
things.
Dr. Hsu is licensed to work in the state of Arizona. If the deceased is located more than 100 miles from the office in Goodyear, transportation to a closer facility may be required. Contact office for clarification at time of request. Please note, not all funeral homes allow autopsies to be performed on site. Body transportation to a difference facility would be required. There will be additional fees required.
